Installing WordPress plugin is the second most important thing after you are done with WordPress installation. Plugins allow users to perform various functions like displaying a video, image gallery, slider, and much more. Without a plugin, it is very difficult to create your dream website and hence you cannot impress your visitors. That said, it is also important to limit the number of plugins in order to reduce the load time of your website. Let us have a quick and detailed look at the three simple and easy ways one can add plugins to their WordPress website.
Installing WordPress plugin using the 'Search Plugin' Bar
The simplest and easiest way for any beginner to install a plugin is with the help of the search bar provided in the WordPress. However, please be informed that here only the plugins that are present in WordPress plugin directory will be available for installation. To begin, go to your WordPress admin dashboard and click/hover on Plugins ›› Click on Add New.
Locate the Search Plugin bar and search for the desired plugin. Here I am searching for the theme check plugin ›› After you find your desired plugin click on Install Now. Allow few seconds so that WordPress installs the plugin.
After the installation is done you would see an Activate button. In order for the plugin to work it needs to be activated. After the installation is done click on activate.
That's it, we are done adding a plugin successfully using the Search Plugin bar. Please be informed that some plugins would not work simply by installing and activating it. You need to configure them by going to your admin panel and clicking on Settings ›› Name of the plugin.
Installing WordPress plugin using Upload Button in WordPress Admin
Some of the plugins which are premium/paid ones do not appear in the WordPress plugin repository. Those plugins need to be downloaded and uploaded directly to WordPress. Here I would show you how to install such plugins.
Starting off, navigate to your WordPress admin dashboard and click/hover on Plugins ›› Click on Add New ›› Click on Upload Plugin button.
Once you click on Upload Plugins, you would be asked to choose the file from your computer ›› Select the desired file (usually plugin files come in a .zip format, please do not extract it, upload the exact file.) ›› Click Open ›› Click Install Now.
For illustration purpose, I downloaded the source file (zip file) of "theme check" plugin from WordPress.com and uploading the same .zip file. Using this method you can add any plugin to WordPress.
After clicking Install Now, allow some seconds to WordPress for the installation to complete. In the meanwhile, you would notice WordPress is extracting the file and installing it. After the installation is finished, you need to click on Activate Plugin in order for the plugin to work.
That's it, we have successfully uploaded and activated our plugin. Please be informed that some plugins would not work simply by installing and activating it. You need to configure them by going to your admin panel and clicking on Settings ›› Name of the plugin.
Installing WordPress plugin using File Transfer Protocol
Sometimes it might happen that your hosting company is not allowing you to install a plugin. Again, your hosting company might have some restrictions which could limit your plugin installation capability. In these cases, your only friend is an FTP client. Using an FTP client you can upload a file to WordPress. Please be informed that this method is not user-friendly for beginners. And it might sometimes be frustrating if you do not upload the files properly.
To do so, first, you need to have the zip file or the source file of the plugin downloaded. After this, simply extract the zip file and you would see that the file contents get extracted to a folder having a name same as the zip file. Your next step would be connecting your FTP client and navigate to
/wp-content/plugins/. If you face any problem connecting your FTP or you do not know the username-password, do not hesitate to get in touch with your hosting company. Upload the whole folder, the one which was created after extracting the zip file under the path
After you have successfully uploaded the folder, go to your admin panel of WordPress ›› Click on Plugins ›› Locate the desired plugin and click on activate.
Bingo! We have successfully uploaded and activated our plugin using FTP.
